Now that the season’s over and you’re thinking of storing your winter wear till the next season comes around, it’s time to take note of the proper techniques and products to clean, care and revitalise your winter wear.

*IMPORTANT*: Never use conventional laundry detergents to wash your waterproof ski wear

It is a common misconception that waterproof jackets and pants can be washed with regular household detergents. While this may ‘clean’ your waterproof ski wear, regular detergents have a very negative effect on waterproofing and instead causes fabric to absorb water and ‘wet out’ in damp or wet conditions.

In essence, conventional laundry detergents should be avoided at all cost as they strip the waterproofing layers off your waterproof clothing and equipment, rendering them ineffective.

Durable Water-Repellent (DWR) Finish – The science behind waterproof & breathable fabrics

All snow jackets and pants are made to be both waterproof and yet breathable. Much research has been put into these materials and that is why it is common to see hefty price tags on most of these products. The combination of waterproof and breathable fabric is achieved by applying a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish to the outermost surface the fabrics. This layer prevents the fabric from absorbing moisture by making water bead up and roll off, while also minimises condensation forming within and maximises breathability.

All materials have their limitations, though. The DWR finishes are not permanent and need to be regularly maintained to optimise performance. As such, it is important to use the correct products and techniques to clean and care for them.

In the next section, we will introduce the 2 products that you should start using on all of your waterproof clothing and equipment.
